It is Finished!

A man is incomplete until he is married, and then he is finished.  A woman is incomplete until she is married, and then she is finished.  I sometimes begin marriage homilies like this to open hearts with humor and open up the profound sacrament of marriage.  The humor is in the double meaning of ‘finished.’  A man is incomplete until he is married and then he is finished (hands together chest). A man is incomplete until he is married and then he is finished (hands clutching throat).  The fact is that both are true, though you won’t hear this at your Disney wedding or on the beach married by your friend.  Only our church and scriptures counsel us that marriage is a death of who you once were as a self-centered single, but at the same time a fulfillment of who you are called to be as an other-centered spouse and parent.
