Jesus wants us to pay close attention to what we are building in our lives, because it matters more than anything. Most all of us work very hard to build a career, which helps us build a home and family, and secure our way in the world. This is necessary, and not at all easy, and God knows we need this. This is where we all must start, but it is not supposed to end there. At some point we must realize the truth that making a living is not the same as making a life, and that if we are only building status, prestige and wealth, what we are building is empty, and so too will we be.
Winston Churchill knew the wisdom of taking care of what we build, he perhaps said it best, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” The reason why it is so important to decide what we are building with our life, is because what we build materially, then builds us spiritually. If what you are building in your life is wealth, a bank, then you will spiritually become a bank, cold-protected vault, empty inside. If what you are building in life is a sanctuary, a house of prayer, good deeds and fellowship, then you will become a true temple, where God dwells and people flock to.
