We are deep into hurricane season here in Florida. Back one hundred and fifty years or so, hurricane season was just three months-July, August & September. Then in 1935, it expanded to 5 months. Now we are at 6 months, and with the ocean staying warmer for longer, meteorologists want to expand it more. Pretty soon we could just say it’s always hurricane season in Florida, so be prepared! In a way, that’s what our Bible and church says, that in life, powerful storms can come out of nowhere, year round at any time, so be prepared that you not be overwhelmed! That’s why the storm on the seas of Galilee is in all four gospels and why it is our assigned reading in Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall. It’s always hurricane season for all sons and daughters of men. We are vulnerable. We’re exposed to sudden storms, natural disasters and health disasters, as well as just the relentless erosion and weathering of time. Today’s reading helps us be storm ready, not caught off guard by sudden or prolonged suffering, and helps us move toward and not away from the One who can do something about it, our Good Captain, Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.
