The Rejection Sermon

It seems that nowadays there is a podcast on every topic (including my personal favorite St. Hagop sermons). I stumbled upon one last week which resonated with wisdom, especially with today’s feast of Pentecost.  The podcast is called ‘We regret to inform you: the rejection podcast,’ with over one hundred episodes about people who are repeatedly and devastatingly rejected but then go on to achieve great success. They feature Colonel Sanders’ chicken recipe being rejected over 1000 times before he built the KFC empire and Thomas Edison’s 1000 failed attempts to invent the lightbulb. We love these stories where dogged determination prevails over failure to become success.  And the key question which arises in such stories is how did these special people triumph where so many others fizzled out?  Well to get that answer, you could get yourself a degree or read the vast number of self-help leadership books, but here is a pro tip to save you a little time and money. We Christians can look to one book with a one word answer to become people who move from repeated rejection to redemption.  Faith.  Just have faith in a God who made and loves you; who set up this world in such a way that it takes time, long-suffering and perseverance to achieve anything of lasting value. Have faith that when God seems to say ‘no’ to your hopes and prayers, God’s ‘no’ is not a rejection but a redirection, keep trying, but keep turning in the right direction to God.
