Today’s reading from Acts gives us an even older and simpler description of this body that we partake of here at St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Orthodox church. Even before followers of Jesus were known as “Christians,” before dioceses, councils or even churches as we know them, the followers of Jesus were known simply as ‘People of the Way.’ Not people of a doctrine, of a nation, of a race. People of the Way. This ancient name appears in today’s reading, when Saul—still a persecutor—asks for permission to arrest “any who belonged to the Way.” It is a broad and mysterious name, but it is very powerful one, because it contains our original birthright and calling which still challenges and calls us to this day; are we still people of the Way?
