Today’s reading from this week’s feast of Ascension, begins with an odd question. Two angels of God ask the Apostles “Why do you stand staring into heaven?” Odd question, because they have just witnessed their teacher Jesus lifted up and into the clouds. It would seem natural to stare. But I don’t think they were merely staring up in disbelief at the miracle. Even Elon Musk can shoot people and things up into the air, this is not a big deal for the Creator of the universe. And besides, Jesus’ inner circle was very used to miracles. No these Apostles weren’t staring into heaven in disbelief of the miracle, but in disbelief of the entire plan and purpose of their ministry-disheartened-and that’s the reason for the stirring question. ‘Why do you stand staring into heaven?’
